How to tell if your child has a hearing problem

Ages

Normal Activity or Reactions

Pediatricians usually divide cognitive behavior into the following age groupings(+/- one or two months). Your child may develop faster or slower. If your child does not show one behavior or reaction at these ages, don't panic. Only when two or more of these behaviors or reactions manifest themselves continuously over a period of months should you have a thorough hearing test performed on your child.

Birth to 3 months
  • Smiles or coos when you speak
  • Awakens, stirs, or acts startled at loud sounds
  • Starts crying after a loud sound
3 - 10 Months
  • Reacts to simple words such as "bye-bye"
  • Smiles when spoken to
  • Turn eyes toward source of familiar sounds such as toys
10 Months - 1 1/2 Years
  • Understands simple requests
  • Responds to his/her name
  • Respond to changes in your tone of voice
  • Repeats sounds you make such as "ma-ma" or "da-da"
  • Uses his/her voice to ask a question or gain attention
1 1/2 - 2 1/2 Years
  • Listens and responds to stories, songs and rhymes
  • Follows simple commands
  • Points to body parts when asked
  • Names common objects when asked what they are
  • Responds to requests by saying "no" a lot

After 2 1/2 years of age, it should be obvious if your child is not speaking in short phrases, not responding to simple questions, or does not turning around at the sound of your voice.
